welcome to my closet.

Welcome to my closet! After several questions regarding my closet design and the organization systems I use, I’m finally getting around to sharing all the details of this beautiful space I was lucky enough to design when we did our home remodel! I’m giving you the full run down of how I designed this space and links to all the products I use to keep this space beautiful and organized! Because why wouldn’t you want to feel like you are shopping your own closet as if you’re in a boutique!?

the design

I was lucky enough to be able to hand design my closet for a custom system that worked just for me. My husband Wes and I share this closet (his is right behind this photo you see above) and I helped design his as well. Since we did a gut renovation of our home, the closets were written into the bid. Because we had a specific budget to work within, I didn’t go as design heavy in here. I chose very basic hardware and drawers and focused more on the functionality of the space. Truth be told, my closet was supposed to be twice this size in the original design. But after looking at the overall design, we scaled back to create a hallway that led back into our master. In the end, I’m really glad we went in that direction, but this closet is still a bit small for the amount of clothes I have…whoops! But luckily, we have a ton of storage in our downstairs hallway, so I store seasonal clothes down there. I’m a big proponent of only keeping items you can physically wear in your closet you use everyday. Because Seattle is very seasonal, based on the temperature, it’s not hard to keep this space very organized and clean because I only store 2 seasons at a time in here.

I didn’t want to have a dresser in our bedroom so I designed these 6 drawers to store intimates, pajamas/loungewear and workout clothes. The shelves you see to the left of drawers go all the way up to the 9 ft ceilings and provide a ton of extra storage. I use these canvas bins to store all my denim, sweatshirts, leggings, hats/gloves. On the extra shelves, I use these great stackable jewelry trays to organize all my jewelry. I wish I had a better picture of the shelves, but I just recently organized those the way I wanted (after 3 years mind you). Just behind the clothes you see is a curved rod that is perfect for storing longer dresses that touch the floor. I also use these bins to store all my seasonal items like shorts, tank tops and sandals which fit perfectly in that nook, along with my carry on travel suitcase since I do travel quite a bit.

And lastly, when it came to storing my shoes, I decided on floating shelves to display shoes and make a statement as you walk in. This was the only part of my closet that was not custom. I actually snagged these shelves from Home depot for a fraction of the price of the custom options and I think they turned out amazing! Full disclosure: some of the shelves do show some imperfections as they aren’t the best quality, but for the price and the overall impact, I say they are really great!

I’ve attached a screenshot of the closet design that the closet company sent me after I hand drew the design in case you need some ideas for your custom closet! You can also see the design we went with for Wes’s side, too. Unfortunately, I don’t have their contact info as they work with our builder specifically. For new builds or remodel projects, we worked with Remodel Pros and can’t recommend them enough! I have done other projects with them for my interior design clients and they are top notch!

product list + tips

  1. These wicker baskets are great for anywhere in your house (especially in the pantry)! But in the closet, I love them to store beanies, scarves, bathing suits, etc.

  2. Floating shelves for shoes. I have the longest size available.

  3. These are the bins I use to store all my sweatshirts, denim and leggings. Pro tip: make sure to check out Marie Kondo’s Konmari method of folding. This will help keep everything folded next to each other rather than on top of each other.

  4. These plastic stackable shoe bins are perfect for storing away shoes that are more special or that collect dust like velvet.

  5. These acrylic dividers are perfect for storing smaller handbags and clutches.

  6. When organizing your drawers, its important to seperate things. These drawer dividers do just that without having to buy inserts for your dresser. Again, follow the Konmari method of folding to keep drawers organized and always see at one glance what you have.

  7. These stackable jewelry trays come in a variety of sizes and variations.

  8. Velvet hangers are a must! Do me a favor right now and throw away the plastic or wire hangers you get back from the dry cleaners and invest in these. You won’t be sorry!

  9. These are lidded bins I use to store away seasonal things like shorts, tanks and sandals.
