how to style a kimono

Oh Kimono's, how I love thee. This trend has been something I've been wearing for the past several years now and I'm loving that it isn't going anywhere. Its one of the easiest ways to make a bold statement and still be totally practical. As a stylist, I have put a kimono on every body type and they always look great, which most of the time surprises my client. But there are a few rules of thumb when wearing them.

  1. When choosing the right kimono for you, make sure the length is appropriate for your height. You don't want it to be too long to where you're stepping on it - also make sure that your bottoms are peeking out a bit at the bottom to give you a bit more length.
  2. Since kimonos are boxier they should be worn with something form fitting underneath. A bodysuit or camisole tucked into your pants is a perfect solution. You don't want to wear two flowy items together as they can make you look larger than you are.
  3. Style them over a dress or pants. Again, if you do a dress, make sure it's a bodycon dress or a ponte skirt to help create shape. Your bottoms should be skinny jeans or a more form-fitting pant. I wouldn't pair boyfriend jeans with a kimono as it's too much material.
  4. Have fun with it! Kimono's come in so many bold prints and beautiful colors so embrace it and go for something you wouldn't normally wear! I love the particular one I'm wearing because it's more of a jacket style so I can layer it over long sleeve tops and it's perfect for Fall.
